BARR AN UISCE

OUR NAME. OUR HERITAGE.

The Irish words “Barr an Uisce” literal English translation is “above the water”. It is also the Irish name given to Barraniskey, which is a town land set in the heart of County Wicklow, on the East Coast of Ireland. The Irish word “Uisce” or water in English, was used during the time Irish monks first distilled what we now know to be whiskey. They called it “Uisce Beatha” meaning Water of Life. Water from County Wicklow, the Garden of Ireland,  is used to cut our Whiskeys.

From the place where the grass is ‘a green’ like no other green in the world. A place entombed in ice for thousands of years and then sculpted by giant glaciers. Today, if you are lucky enough to stand at the church door of St. Patricks Barraniskey at sunset, you will see just why Co. Wicklow is called the Garden of Ireland.

The Irish words “Barr an Uisce” (pronounced Bar on Ishka) literal English translation is “above the water”. It is also the Irish name given to Barraniskey, which is a townland set in the heart of the beautiful County of Wicklow, on the East Coast of Ireland. The Irish word “Uisce“ or “water” in English, was used during the time Irish monks first distilled what we now know as whiskey. The monks called it “Uisce Beatha” meaning water of life.

Known as the Garden of Ireland, Wicklow represents all that is stunning in Irish countryside. With its fresh water streams, rolling hills, lush forests and majestic views, it offers all that is expected when we think of Ireland.

REDCROSS

The founder of “Barr an Uisce” Irish Whiskey, Ian Jones, comes from the small village of Redcross, which lies below the townland of Barraniskey. Redcross was a major stopping point for horse and carts travelling from southern Ireland to Dublin many years ago.  People who travelled along the East Coast of Ireland found themselves in the village. Redcross became a meeting point for gossip, news, culture and music.
Redcross and Barraniskey were both affected by the penal laws many years ago. In 1803 the Barraniskey church was built for people who moved from the village. The copper coloured Cross still stands in the graveyard in Redcross to this day.

WICKLOW RARE

SMALL BATCH, BLENDED IRISH WHISKEY

“Blend – 80% Grain / 20% Ten year old malt. Matured in first fill Bourbon barrels for 4 years, Finished in Oloroso casks for 6 months. 43% ABV”

Pale gold in color. Aromas of vanilla, honey and baked fruits (confit). Very smooth entry and then expansive with a mouth coating, oily texture. Mid palate shows a nuttiness and warmth with hints of raisin an

d plum. Long, clean finish with subtle marmalade notes and caramel. The Wicklow Blend is as mysterious as the ancient mountains that this blended Irish Whiskey is named for.

Our signature blend with its perfect combination of grain and malt to a 43% ABV is complex, pure and up-lifting. This reflects the native Wicklow spirit shaped over the past five hundred years through our rich and complex heritage, landscape, community and culture’

1803 Single Malt

1803 SINGLE MALT

10 YEAR OLD IRISH WHISKEY

Guaranteed 10 years in first-fill bourbon barrels. 46% ABV

Lustrous, warm, mid-gold color. Aromas of vanilla, white chocolate and caramel (creme brulée) on the palate. Spicy entry and then a broad, silky, creamy mouthfeel. Mid-palate opens to reveal tropical fruits, cinnamon, ginger and a distinct maltiness. Long in the finish with hints of toasted oak. The Wicklow landscape is strong and memorable. When we tasted our ten year old malt ‘1803’ with its 46% ABV, we knew we’d captured that landscape perfectly.

“Deeply sophisticated, while being boldly robust, the 10-year-old malt is both juicy and profound in each sip. This is magnificent stuff, worthy of your hard earned remuneration.”
